Unity

A working design concept.

SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN.

BALANCE HARMONY EMPHASIS RHYTHM SCALE CONTRAST  UNITY

Let’s dance!

Unity defined is the principle of creating a cohesive, harmonious, calming whole. The elements of design are arranged. Color, shape, texture, pattern, light, form, and line. All feel connected. Purposeful. Not chaotic.

A single cohesive story. A simple read.

A unified space feels natural; instinctive.

A unified space reads smoothly; visually navigable sans abrupt stops.

A unified space has a brand identity; one personality.

A unified space appears professional; the shirt tucked in.

Before “doing” a room, create a design concept. A story board. Gather all of your materials. Arrange them on paper. Even better - on the kitchen table. Move things around. Do you see a theme? Do the colors work together? Are the patterns varied in scale? Do the individual pieces of furniture play well with each other? Do said pieces know their job, their purpose in the space? Does your art speak the same language as the feel of the room? Does your space feel unified?

Unity takes effort but looks…

Intentional. Connected. Welcoming.

Read back through our blog. We chat about color, pattern, and texture. We explain the Golden Rule. We discuss balance and emphasis. We hook a theme. We examine minimalism and all out design. We write about the seven principles of design.

Balance, harmony, emphasis, rhythm, scale, contrast, and unity.

Unity - every element in a room doing what is it supposed to do - perfectly.
