Emphasis - The Exclamation Point!
Statement art greets our guests.
Seven Principles of Design.
BALANCE HARMONY EMPHASIS RHYTHM SCALE CONTRAST UNITY
Emphasis. Focal point. Center stage. Attention grabber.
Emphasis tells your eye where to start. It holds your attention for a bit as it sets the tone for the room. Emphasis dictates design hierarchy. The order of importance.
Emphasis can be fairly easy to achieve. Sometimes hard to limit. Too many points of interest, the room’s contents fight for attention. Balance and harmony are key.
Emphasis can be achieved in a variety of ways.
Color, pattern, texture. Art, lighting, a statement piece.
Strategically placing your most important design feature is important. Emphasis your emphasis.
Draw attention to a key element within the space. A focal point is critical. It immediately captures the attention and enhances the room’s overall composition.
If using an object:
· position the piece in a highly visible spot - behind a sofa, over a fireplace;
· hang art at eye level; or
· select an oversized piece like a mirror, statement chandeliers, or sculptural furniture.
If using color:
· choose a deep, sophisticated hue to dominate the room; or
· add a contrasting color as a single accent - a pillow on a neutral couch.
If using pattern:
· cover walls with graphic wallpaper to add drama;
· select a vibrant stone for a countertop; or
· go for a patterned tile on the wall or floor to add movement.
If using texture:
· textures like wood, glass, and metal can be layered to create an interesting yet cohesive design; or
· tactile emphasis will be achieved by luxurious fabrics like velvet or fur.
Examine the room. What do you see first? Is it important enough to command the room? Does it compete with other items? Does it bring balance and harmony to the space?
