Dots don’t have to polka
Jane’s Room
A Dot. Round, pock, decimal point, spot, circles, ring, wheel, loop, sphere, ball.
We see this repeated over and over in nature’s beauty.
Sun, moon, earth, bubbles, eyes, Dalmatians, lady bugs, leopards.
The center of a daffodil.
Constantly connected, completed, no end, no angles; a community. Rings symbolize wholeness, unity, inclusivity.
Traced or solid. Corporations use circles in their logos. Olympic rings, Audi, Target, AT&T, Starbucks, Pepsi, Mastercard, Pinterest.
Another circle in the sky. Japan, Bangladesh, South Korea, Greenland; all use a colorful, patriotic round in their country’s flag.
What do circles say to you? Happy. Juvenile. Playful.
Remember Connect the Dots?
An entire page of little periods waiting for the pen to form a line and create a box so we could tag it with our initial.
Symmetrical or off-set. 3D or flat. Shape or pattern. Lighting, fabric, tiles, wallpaper, art, furniture – all come in the round. Dots can be used to create pattern, highlight something, evoke movement, add visual movement.
Jane’s room. Spot the dots… subtle bubbles in the watercolor window valance; bold, gold polka dotted wallpaper; the tulip table’s circles on top and bottom; round drawer pulls.
One circle makes a modern statement.
Too many make your head spin.
Dots don’t have to dance. Use rings in adult spaces. A circular mirror, dinner plates standing on their side, a round coffee table, globe lighting overhead.
Polka dot or just a dot… dots are a powerful and versatile design element.
